Any Way The Wind Glows

Reviewed: 29th January 2009

100% wind powered light!Any product with a name like Firewinder needs to be pretty darn cool. Thankfully, this decorative outdoor light is positively sub-zero as it actually visualises the wind’s energy. And that’s not dreamy hippy-speak, it’s a fact.

100% wind powered light!

100% wind-powered, Firewinder is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. By day it’s a relatively unobtrusive dangling corkscrew doodah that spins in the wind. But when night falls and the wind blows, it lights up, creating a beautiful spiralling effect.

The faster the blow the greater the glow, so in a real gust Firewinder becomes a pulsating pillar of light. It’s truly spellbinding and eco-friendly to boot.

Hippo Water Saving Device

Reviewed: 15th December 2008

Hippo Water Saving DeviceIt’s easy to reduce the amount of water you use to flush your toilet, with one of the many toilet cistern devices.

Why not treat your toilet to a water saving device? By placing a Hippo or Save-A-Flush in your cistern, you can save about one litre of water each time you flush. The 2 water saving devices available are designed for different cisterns based on the age of your toilet.

Pre-1993 - Hippo Water Saver
1993-1999 - Save A Flush
Since 1999 - None required

Remember, if you have a modern dual flush toilet, then no water saving device is required.

The Hippo can retain up to 2.5 litres of water with every flush of your toilet. The Hippo Water-Saver device is a bag that sits in the water underneath your cistern float. It is made from durable heavy gauge polyethylene and has a hole in it to allow water to circulate, preventing any stagnation.

The Save A Flush can help you save up to one litre of water with every flush. The bag of crystals (made from a harmless silicone gell) sits in the bottom of your toilet cistern. The bag will swell up around six hours after installation.

I Like Big Butts

Reviewed: 5th December 2008

Moss-green Beehive WaterA lot of the water that we use in the home doesn’t need to be pure drinking water direct from the tap. As more people are switching to metered water, investing in a water butt to catch rain water is fast becoming the norm.

The water collected, at minimum, can be used to water your plants over summer but many people are now making use of it to wash their cars or their outdoor furniture too.

With more and more designs being introduced such as the Moss-green Beehive Water pictured, water butts allow you to save rainwater without having to compromise the overall appearance of your garden.

Introducing a water butt into your garden, thanks to the British weather, could help you reduce your water bills by up to 20%, and if you water your garden in the evening or early morning, then less water is likely to evaporate.

Eco Friendly Bin Bags

Reviewed: 1st December 2008

So you’ve got a brown, gray and green recycling bin to help you separate general refuse from plastics, tins and glass. Sadly most people still use supermarket carrier bags to neatly wrap up their general waste meaning it adds a couple thousand years to the degrading process.

Supermarkets are trying to deter us from using carrier bags as bin liners by removing them from sight, or in some cases, charging for them in an attempt to get people to re-use those they already have. But with so many still lining their kitchen bins with them, its a slow process.

Now you can get Eco Friendly Bio-Degradable Pedal Bin Liners!

These pedal bin liners fit most pedal bins and degrade completely, changing the way we use plastics today. There are even special eco friendly brabantia bin bags meaning the impact on the legacy we leave is almost immediate, degrading totally and harmlessly, changing the way we use plastics and having an immediate impact on the landfill problem.

Eco Kettle Makes A Quicker Cuppa

Reviewed: 26th November 2008

Eco KettlePutting all eco issues, and world saving ideals aside, the Eco Kettle can quite simply save energy and help reduce your electricty bills! Do you need any other reason to get one?

So how much energy do we waste with our current kettles? Well to put it in perspective DEFRA have quantified how much energy we’re wasting every year;

If everyone boiled only the water they needed to make a cup of tea instead of filling the kettle every time, almost enough electricity to run all the street lighting in the U.K. would be saved.

Until now, accurately measuring the amount of water to be boiled in your kettle has been all but impossible. The new ECO Kettle is different: the internal reservoir holds a full capacity of water ready for use, while the measuring button allows any quantity – from a single cupful to full capacity – to be released into the separate chamber for boiling.

The result? Exactly the right amount of water every time you boil, no more waste (up to 30% energy saving) and a quicker cup of tea!

Solar Powered Fairy Lights

Reviewed: 24th November 2008

Solar Powered Fairy LightsWe received these a few days ago, and having used solar lights in the past, weren’t expecting anything to jump up and down about - we were proved wrong!

Beautify your garden at night with these Solar Powered Fairy Lights and don’t worry about wires cascading down your walls, through the window or letterbox leading to a mains plug (very dangerous!).

You can adorn your garden with light and a little bit of luxury without the need for batteries or electricity. Leave the solar panel in sunlight to charge up the solar-powered battery and drape the LED fairy lights around your garden and over furniture for a wonderful light display at night.

A solar sensor automatically switches your solar powered fairy lights on at night and off again at dawn and a full charge delivers an impressive 20 hours of light.

Believe it or not, these solar lights are as bright as their standard mains-powered counterparts and come with spike and clip fitting, so they stay in place once you’ve set them up. With six light modes and three time modes you decide what they do and when.

Roberts Solar Powered DAB Radio

Reviewed: 15th November 2008

Roberts Solar Powered DAB RadioSolar power isn’t new, its been around since the start of civilisation meeting basic human needs such as drying food, heating water, baking bricks and lighting houses.

Today more and more people are making use of solar power in and around their home, saving money and energy at the same time. Introducing solar power doesn’t mean having to cover your roof in solar panels, a lot of people are simply opting for solar powered devices that would otherwise rely on electricty.

Solar powered appliances are becoming more popular and readily available, one example of this is the introduction of the Solar DAB Radio from Roberts.

DAB Radio’s offer more choice, improved sound quality, extra information on broadcasts such as song title, artist, news and weather, and there’s no re-tuning required when moving the radio from room to room.

The Roberts Solar Powered DAB Radio allows you to tune 10 of your favourite radio stations and subsequently access them by the touch of a button. The Radio isn’t completely reliable on solar power and can be operated from either the mains or from batteries. Reycle Second Hand Thermal Underwear

Reviewed: 11th November 2008

Buyeco - Show Off Your Designer Tic-Tac LidsWe know it sounds gross and wrong on so many levels, but stick with us on this one.

Polypropylene was widely used in furniture from the 1960’s and more recently can be found in ropes, thermal underwear, carpets and the lids of tic-tacs.

As you can imagine, with all the different uses of this man made thermoplastic polymer, it often ends up on the rubbish dump where it sits for years.

Now a young UK based designer has decided to give second hand thermal underwear a new lease of life by transforming them, and other Polypropylene products, into lampshades!

This understated pendant lampshade, 1 of 3 simple, yet striking designs, is made from 100% recyclable polypropylene
