Use A Bag For Life
Reviewed: 6th December 2008
Much hype was made in 2007 following Sainsburys Bag For Life campaign, where it gave away 20,000 eco friendly shopping bags with the slogan “I’m not a plastic bag”, made by designer Anya Hindmarch. Within hours they became a fashion accessory, turning up for sale on eBay for hundreds of pounds.
Many other supermarkets followed in their footsteps, with Asda holding a design competition for their own Bag For Life campaign. Some supermarkets held a Bag For Life amnesty, whereby people could get a free bag for life in return for 5 plastic carriers.
In the UK alone, an average household has 16 bags, with over 40% having 40 bags, most of which are used in pedal bins, instead of eco friendly bin liners.
Ireland saw a 95% decrease in the use of supermarkets carriers when they introduced a 15% levy in 2002, as more people used re-usable eco friendly shopping bags to carry their family groceries home in.

So you’ve got a brown, gray and green recycling bin to help you separate general refuse from plastics, tins and glass. Sadly most people still use supermarket carrier bags to neatly wrap up their general waste meaning it adds a couple thousand years to the degrading process.
